Photosensitivity & Sun Exposure

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT BOTANICAL INGREDIENTS

Haus Of Alchemy products may contain botanical ingredients, essential oils, and other naturally derived substances that may have different effects when applied to the skin.

Certain essential oils and botanical constituents may increase the skin's sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This can result in a reaction when treated or exposed skin is subsequently exposed to sunlight or other sources of UV light.

FDA specifically recognizes that certain citrus oils may cause skin reactions when used in cosmetic products and the skin is subsequently exposed to sunlight.

WHAT IS PHOTOSENSITIVITY?

Photosensitivity is an increased sensitivity or reaction of the skin following exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

Depending on the substance and individual circumstances, a photosensitive reaction may include redness, irritation, burning, discomfort, or a sunburn-like reaction. Photosensitivity can result from either phototoxic or photoallergic reactions, and the nature and severity of a reaction can vary.

INGREDIENTS COMMONLY ASSOCIATED WITH PHOTOSENSITIVITY

Certain citrus-derived essential oils are commonly associated with phototoxic reactions when specific photosensitizing constituents are present. These may include:

  • Bergamot
  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Grapefruit
  • Orange

The presence of one of these ingredients does not by itself establish that a particular product is photosensitizing. The potential for a reaction may depend on the specific oil, how it was produced or processed, its concentration, the formulation, the amount applied, and the manner in which the product is used.

For example, certain citrus oils may be processed to substantially reduce or remove phototoxic constituents. Accordingly, customers should rely on the ingredient and usage information provided for the specific product rather than assuming that every product containing a citrus-derived ingredient presents the same level of risk.

PRODUCTS APPLIED TO THE SKIN

Photosensitivity is primarily a consideration when a potentially photosensitizing substance is applied to the skin and the treated area is subsequently exposed to UV radiation.

If a product contains an ingredient identified as potentially photosensitizing, review the product-specific directions and warnings before use.

As a precaution, avoid applying a product containing a potentially photosensitizing ingredient to exposed skin immediately before prolonged or intentional UV exposure unless the product directions specifically indicate otherwise.

SUN EXPOSURE

When using a topical product that may increase sensitivity to UV exposure:

  • Follow the product-specific directions and warnings.
  • Avoid unnecessary or prolonged direct sunlight on the treated area.
  • Consider protective clothing when appropriate.
  • Use appropriate sun protection when exposed to sunlight.
  • Avoid tanning beds and other intentional sources of UV radiation when a product's ingredients indicate a photosensitivity concern.

The appropriate precautions may vary according to the specific product and ingredient.

PATCH TESTING

When introducing a new topical product, consider performing a small-area test before broader application.

A patch test may help identify irritation or sensitivity, but it does not guarantee that a photosensitive reaction will not occur.

Discontinue use if you experience redness, burning, itching, irritation, pain, or other unexpected discomfort.

If a significant or persistent reaction occurs, seek appropriate medical attention.

INGREDIENT AWARENESS

Customers are responsible for reviewing the ingredient information, directions, warnings, and intended use provided with each product before use.

An ingredient being natural, botanical, or plant-derived does not mean that it is free from safety considerations. FDA notes that ingredients from plants can cause irritation, allergic reactions, or other adverse effects and that “natural” does not establish that an ingredient is safe for cosmetic use.

INDIVIDUAL CONSIDERATIONS

Individual responses to cosmetic and botanical ingredients vary.

If you have a history of photosensitivity, unusually sensitive skin, a skin condition, take medication known to increase sensitivity to sunlight, or have other concerns about UV exposure, consult an appropriately qualified healthcare professional before using a product that may increase photosensitivity.
