How To Smudge

A Guide To Cleansing, Renewal & Intentional Living

Smudging is a tradition practiced across many cultures to prepare a space for reflection, meditation, prayer, or intentional living. While individual practices vary, the purpose remains the same: creating an environment that feels peaceful, grounded, and aligned with your personal intentions.

At Haus Of Alchemy, we encourage every ritual to begin with presence, purpose, and respect for the traditions that inspire your practice.

Before You Begin

• Choose a well-ventilated area and open a window or door to encourage fresh airflow.

• Keep a heat-resistant dish or shell nearby to catch falling ash.

• Never leave a burning sage stick unattended.

• Always extinguish your sage completely after use.

Step 1: Set Your Intention

Take a quiet moment before lighting your sage.

Consider what you would like to release and what you hope to invite into your space. Your intention becomes the foundation of your ritual.

Step 2: Light Your Sage

Using a candle, long match, or gas flame, ignite the tip of your sage stick.

Allow the flame to burn briefly before gently extinguishing it, allowing the sage to smolder and produce a steady stream of cleansing smoke.

Step 3: Cleanse Your Space

Move slowly throughout your space, allowing the smoke to reach corners, doorways, and areas where energy tends to collect.

Many people begin at the entrance and move throughout the home, while others prefer to begin in the furthest room and work toward the exit. Choose the approach that feels most natural for your practice.

Step 4: Pause With Intention

As you move through your space, take a moment to reflect, pray, meditate, or repeat an affirmation that aligns with your intention.

Example:

"May this space be filled with peace, clarity, balance, and positive energy."

Step 5: Complete Your Ritual

When your cleansing is complete, safely extinguish the sage by pressing the lit end into a fire-safe dish until no smoke remains.

Store any unused sage in a cool, dry place until your next ritual.

Additional Practices

Many people choose to complement smoke cleansing/ smudging with candles, crystals, meditation, or personal reflection. Your practice is uniquely your own, and there is no single correct way to create an intentional space.

Safety Guidelines

• Burn sage only in a well-ventilated area.

• Keep away from children, pets, curtains, and flammable materials.

Manifest Your Vision.
