Some came gently, with messages and peace. Others came quickly, sharply—The Little People—spirits who didn’t want to be seen, but made sure I felt them. I spoke to ancestors. I saw the dead. I was visited by guides and haunted by truths no child should know. And even though I didn’t understand it all, my spirit did. My gifts were alive, even when I didn’t have the language for them yet.

That silence ended the day a medium named Damaris looked at me—really looked at me—and confirmed everything I already felt in my bones:
